How to Re-register Ex-GK Auction Vehicles in Kenya: My Journey With a Peugeot 406

By Patrick Mutuma – CEO, PAMURICK Consult Ltd

Buying an ex-GK (Government of Kenya) vehicle at auction can be a great opportunity — the units are often “well-maintained” and attractively priced. However, for many Kenyans, especially those engaging in this process for the first time, the real test comes after the gavel falls.

I recently went through the long and winding road of re-registering a Peugeot 406 I bought at auction in 2024, and I can tell you – the process demands patience, precision, and persistence.

Why Re-registration Is Important

Ex-GK vehicles are typically decommissioned from government service and sold via public auctions. Once purchased, the vehicles must be re-registered into private ownership, complete with a new number plate and civilian logbook. It’s not just a formality — it’s a legal requirement for road use.

Here’s what NTSA and other agencies typically require:

Required Documents for Re-registration

  1. Original logbook issued by the vendor
  2. Official search/records from NTSA
  3. Advertisement of the sale (local newspaper, Kenya Gazette, or public portal)
  4. Approved lot listing of the auction vehicle
  5. Letter of offer for the unit
  6. Letter of notification of award of the tender
  7. Payment receipts for the sale
  8. Release letter or gate pass from vendor
  9. Fully filled Transfer Form C
  10. Inspection by the National Police Service (especially if modified/facelifted)
  11. Current customs entry and duty payment receipts
  12. Re-registration inspection approval by NTSA
  13. Submission of documents to NTSA for number plate allocation and new logbook

My Personal Experience

Even with experience in the auto industry, I faced several hurdles:

  • Customs entry and inspection process at JKIA delayed my paperwork for weeks.
  • Police inspection backlogs led to multiple trips to the station.
  • At NTSA, misplaced photocopies forced me to reprint and resubmit.

It felt like a treasure hunt at times, but having the complete checklist helped me stay on course.

Pro Tips to Avoid Delays

  • 📁 Make multiple copies of every document
  • 🗂️ Organize your documents in a labeled folder or envelope
  • 💼 Work with professionals or agents, but stay informed
  • 🧭 Follow up actively – don’t assume everything is being handled

Why This Matters

For high-value clients, collectors, and professionals, understanding this process is essential. A well-documented and properly re-registered unit ensures clear legal ownership, roadworthiness, and better resale value.
